HOW DOES LEVEL 2 DIFFER FROM THE PAUL ROLLAND STRING PEDAGOGY WORKSHOP (LEVEL 1)?
Level 2 Endorsement includes more in-depth study with one mentor (the "teacher") with individualized work with each attendee (the “candidate”) in a small group setting.
HOW MANY LEVELS ARE THERE AND HOW ARE THEY OFFERED?
There are four Levels of Endorsement offered at least once a year. In-person or online formats may be offered. 2021 was an online format. Attending a full in-person workshop at least once during the complete 4 level Certification course is required.
DO I NEED TO HAVE THE LEVEL 1 ENDORSEMENT BEFORE TAKING LEVEL 2?
Yes. The Levels must be taken sequentially. Attending a week-long online or in-person Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Workshop with17-20 hours of content (earning Level 1 Endorsement) is a prerequisite to apply for Level 2. It is recommended to have at least six months in between each Level for the application of Paul Rolland String Pedagogy in the candidate's teaching and playing. The 6 months interval is recommended to allow for the candidate to become more familiar with using the materials which results in a stronger frame of reference.
WHAT TOPICS WILL LEVEL 2 INCLUDE?
Level 2 Topics will include:
Principles of Movement,
Establishing Instrument Hold,
Left Hand Placement,
Left Finger Action and Placement
HOW DO I REGISTER?
WHO WILL MY TEACHER (“MENTOR”) BE?
Your mentor will be assigned from a list of experienced mentors. The candidate’s background and Rolland pedagogy experiences will be considered in assigning the mentor.
HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED FOR THE ENDORSEMENT TRAINING SESSIONS?
The number of hours is approximately 11-13. The session schedule is determined by the mentor in consultation with the candidates.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE LEVEL 2 SESSIONS?
The Teaching of Action in String Playing (book) by Paul Rolland with Marla Mutschler.
A good internet connection and video capabilities. Headphones or speakers are suggested for optimal listening.
IS THERE PREPARATION EXPECTED AHEAD OF THE START OF SESSIONS?
Reading and taking notes on specific chapters and films in The Teaching of Action in String Playing and making your pre-instruction video are required. The detailed curriculum is available after the registration process is completed.
WILL VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, AND BASS ALL BE ADDRESSED?
The pedagogy is applicable to all stringed instruments and two videos, Level 2 Rolland Actions, cello, and Level 2 Rolland Actions, bass, are part of the curriculum.
MUST I PASS A TEST TO BE GRANTED A LEVEL 2 ENDORSEMENT?
There is a final evaluation that includes teaching two Rolland Actions to a pupil of your choice. Submitting a journal of notes from the text, films, and sessions is part of the final evaluation.
WILL I RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF LEVEL 2 ENDORSEMENT?
Yes, you will be awarded a Certificate of Level 2 Endorsement and receive feedback on your final evaluation after all requirements are fulfilled. Upon successful completion of Level 2 and payment of Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Society annual dues, you will become a member and be listed on the Society’s website as having Level 2 Endorsement.
